NORTHRIDGE, CA – San Diego State University will officially be launching a course dedicated to the late Texas star Selena Quintanilla Perez. The course will be offered starting in Spring 2020.

San Diego State University Assistant Professor Nathian Shae Rodriguez tweeted on Tuesday, “The course explores & deconstructs the socio-cultural mediated representations of intersectional Latinx identities by analyzing the music, career & influence of @SelenaLaLeyenda.”
The creation of the course came from students reflecting Latinx representation in media. Many of the students identify as Latinos, Hispanics, Mexican Americans, and DACA. These terms fall under the umbrella term called Latinx. Students are excited that someone that looks and sounds like them, will be offered as a course. It took 2 1/2 years for it to be approved.
He announced it on what would have been Selena’s 48thbirthday. The communities response was positive. Some students said they would have already graduated when the course is offered. Even a California State University, Long Beach student begged for the course be placed at the institution.
The School of Journalism and Media Department named the course as JMS 496 Selena & Latinx Media Representation. Students can enroll to the course starting on Nov. 1st.
According to NBC 7 San Diego , Professor Rodriguez said “Selena influenced his own identity.” He learned Spanish and how to dance through her music. “Spanish wasn’t my first language, Spanish wasn’t her first language…I related to her because I was living this kind of binational, bicultural life. Selena represented this identity of trying to live the American dream and being successful at it."
